If you are even somewhat “online,” as they say, then you’ve probably run into a few “ins and outs” lists on social media. Mostly cheeky and mainly for funsies, these New Year lists outline what people feel deserve more air time in 2023, as well as what needs to be shucked away for eternity. What’s out, says the internet? FaceTime (in: voice memos). Pickleball (in: ping pong). Quiet quitting (in: healthy work boundaries). Coastal Grandma (in: Log Cabin Grandpa).
The lists, quite literally, go on and on, and vary from person to person. But what we’ve consistently noticed across the board is that people are really just leaning more toward authenticity and doing whatever the heck they want, and away from rigid trends and expectations—and we are all about that. This year, and always.
Inspired by all the lists, we compiled a list of our own. Behold: Well+Good’s unofficial 2023 wellness “ins and outs.” We hope you enjoy, before “ins and outs” are out.
In: Wearing fun pimple patches in public (Out: Being embarrassed about it)
You can find pimple patches at just about any Target or Sephora, but what makes these special is that they’re bright and colorful—like you’re wearing the stickers you so loved in kindergarten all over your face. The “Party Pack comes with 32 Hydro-Stars, each of which is made with hydrocolloid to absorb fluid and reduce inflammation, zapping your zit as you go about your day.
In: Log Cabin Grandpa (Out: Coastal grandma)
Sizes available: XS-XXL
This sweater had over 1,800 people on its waitlist, but it’s finally back—right in time for our Log Cabin Grandpa era, or Cabincore. What is Log Cabin Grandpa, you ask? It’s basically what you’d pack if you were going on vacation somewhere that involves cabins, log fires, and snow or frigid weather. Think fuzzy, argyle, and boots that belong on Tumblr. It’s essentially the opposite of Coastal Grandma.
This sweater is a great place to start, since it’s naturally oversized (order your size, but just know that it’s very loose-fitting), soft and stretchy (thanks to its high-quality polyester-spandex blend), and the fair isle pattern is perfectly muted. Really, what you’d expect to be tucked away in Grandpa’s winter wardrobe.
Sizes available: XS-L
Colors: 23
Another top with another waitlist, the Blanket Shirt from Outerknown had, at one point, 20,000 people trying to get their hands on it. It’s pricey, but it’s worth it. The heavyweight, durable cotton material makes for better layering when it comes to colder temps, and it’s the perfect length (great for tucking in, but easy for wearing as-is). Plus, with 23 different flannel patterns, you’ll find one that suits your own Grandpa energy.
Sizes available: 6-11
Colors: 3
We coveted these boots so much, we bought several pairs when they went on sale for Black Friday. They’re the perfect winter getaway boots you want for everyday wear—they’re made with weatherproof nubuck leather and can take the hit if you’re spending a lot of time outdoors, feature a cute cuff for style, and come with a faux fur lining so they provide feet with extra warmth. They really are perfect.
In: Carry-on bags (Out: Lost luggage)
This year, we’re investing in high-quality carry-on luggage that lets us stuff that absolute most stuff as possible to avoid checking in bags. We’ve all been victim to lost luggage, but after Southwestgate this past holiday season (the airline had to cancel 70 percent of their flights), we’re truly taking no chances. We’ve tried and tested the Paravel Aviator carry-on, and have concluded it’s truly the best when it comes to spacious, sleek, and smooth-rolling use. Its dimensions (13.7” x 21.7” x 9”) and weight (8.2 pounds) meets most TSA requirements, so you should be in the clear, but it never hurts to double check your airline’s guidelines.
“I call this bag my ‘Mary Poppins Bag,’ because the amount of stuff it can fit is pure magic—it almost doesn’t make physical sense,” says senior beauty editor Zoë Weiner, who’s been using this bag (and the brand’s slightly smaller ‘mini’ version) for years. “It’s got all kinds of artfully-placed pockets, and is perfect for staying organized for a weekend trip or even longer.”
In: Colorful dinnerware for more hosting occasions (Out: Paper plates and SOLO cups)
This year, we have big plans on hosting more. And/or having more elaborate meals with show off-y dinnerware and tableware. Even if we’re just reheating pizza from the night before, we want to use fancier plates that make mealtime feel just a little more special. Call it dopamine dinners or just the need for bright colors after years of minimalist kitchen trends—we’re into it regardless. These glasses (a set of four or eight) from Our Place are so beautiful and bright, and they come in 10 different colors. Mix and match with your white plates, or refresh your cabinets with some bold hues (the Full Plates from Our Place are sooo pretty).
If ever a set of dishes deserved to be called “party plates,” it’s these. They’re so bright and happy-looking, they’ll undoubtedly make anything you serve on top of them taste delicious (… and if it doesn’t, your guests will be too busy complimenting your plates to notice).
In: Sneakers we wore in high-school (Out: Uncomfortable footwear)
Sizes available: 5-7.5
Colors: 29+
Uncomfortable sneakers are definitely out. What’s in? Going for our favorites when we were teens, like the Vans Old Skool tennis shoes, which feel beach-y and offer a no-frills, effortless “vibe.” You probably already know—you likely had at least two or three pairs in high-school. Other options include the Adidas Superstar, and Chuck Taylor All Stars. Comfort is queen.
In: Press-on nails (Out: Basic, boring manis)
This 24-piece set comes in 20 patterns—mostly almond-shape, but a couple coffin if that’s more your taste. What we love is that they look salon-quality, but without the salon prices, wait time, and damage. Made with non-toxic glue, these are a lot healthier for nail beds—and they’re also reusable. The kit comes with 24 press-on nails, a nail file and buffer, a cuticle stick, and glue. If the nails are too long, it’s easy to file ’em down to your liking.
In: Food that will definitely make your breath stink (Out: Caring that your breath stinks)
Got a hot date later? No, you don’t. JK—but we *are* fully leaning into garlic-y, seafood and potent spice-forward foods, and at the top of that list is the Fly By Jing x Fishwife smoked tinned salmon collab. Hand-packed, thoughtfully brined, and soaked in Fly By Jing’s famous Sichuan Chili Crisp, the flavors are just truly unreal. We love how much protein this smoked salmon packs—as well as how versatile it is. Avocado and smoked salmon toast? Yes. Smoked salmon and egg scramble? Surely. Eating straight from the tin because that’s just how things are going? Yep!!!
This creamy anchovy spread is so delicious, you’ll be tempted to eat it out of the jar (honestly, go for it). We love this as a veggie dip, but it also brings more flavor and depth to pastas.
Garlic lovers, you need at least one tub of garlic dip or spread in your fridge at all times. It’s so versatile, and makes every meal and savory snack that much better. Toom’s six-ingredient dip is extra fluffy and spreadable.
In: Tinted lip balms (Out: Drying lipstick)
“Can we leave lipstick in 2022 and all agree a tinted balm is the superior choice? You get to hydrate and add color in a single swipe, and this year it so more and more brands are making formulations that long surpass your average Chapstick. Needless to say, I’m stocking up, mostly to replace the ones I’ll inevitably lose,” says Francesca Krempa, associate commerce editor. She names this Burt’s Bees tinted lip balm in Daisy Blister as a top choice—and it’s only $5.
For extra gloss and SPF, we love Cay Skin Isle lip balm, especially in “Irie Rose” which is this perfect everyday coral tint.
Another under-$10 gem, Honest’s tinted lip has some of the best shades (six total) and offers best-in-class hydration, thanks to that generous dose of avocado oil.
In: Easy meal kits (Out: Overly-complicated cooking)
“Taco kits: It’s time to give ‘em the love they deserve,” says Krempa. “I used to be a frozen pizza gal when I was in a pinch for dinner and didn’t feel like cooking, but lately, I’ve been keeping a taco kit on hand so when I’m feeling lazy, I can whip up something easy with whatever I have on hand. Ground beef, chicken, a can of jackfruit, beans and rice from the back of my pantry—they’re so easy.”
In: Mood-boosting makeup (Out: Clean Girl Aesthetic)
This year, dopamine dressing is coming for our makeup bags, with bold, bright, expressive colors replacing all things boring beauty. These stick-on eyeshadow designs, which were created by Lizzo’s makeup artist, are the perfect place to start. They’ll help you achieve a jaw-dropping, joy-inducing look… no expert-level hand-eye coordination required.
Originally $106, now $72
Another MUA creation (this one’s by Euphoria’s Donni Davy), this kit comes with glitter, gems, and bright colors—aka everything you need to make makeup feel fun.
