Corduroy by Don Freeman is about a bear who lives in the toy department of a big store. There are so many book activities to do with this sweet story!
Corduroy is waiting for someone to buy him and take him home.
One day a little girl sees Corduroy and wants to have him. But her mother says no, and points out that Corduroy is missing a button on his overalls. The girl is very disappointed.
That night after the customers leave, Corduroy sets out in the department store in search of a button he can use to repair his overalls.
The story goes on to detail Corduroy's adventures as he explores the big store at night when no one is around. Students love thinking about what that might be like!
Corduroy does not succeed in repairing his pants with a missing button, and ends up right back where he started, in the toy department. The next day the little girl is back, and this time she takes Corduroy home. She sews a new button on Corduroy's pants. They are happy to have each other as friends.
