‘I don’t believe this really happened!’. This is a common reaction to most images shown in the gallery. But our history is not only about game-changing events – it’s also full of small, yet really important details which make it really engrossing.
We hope you enjoy this bunch photos and stories from the amazing history of our civilization.
#1 This dog had saved a number of lives and eventually was awarded a medal. During WWII he peed on a bomb extinguishing the fire and preventing it from spreading…
#2 ‘That’s how political disputes should actually be solved!’ A Republican-Democratic snowball fight 1921
#3 This photo proves that people were obsessed with cats as early as 100 years ago…
#4… though actually this obsession dates back to ancient Egypt – see this 2,700 years old
#5 The same place photographed 58 years apart. The large box on the left had the same calculating capacity as the little chip on the right
#6 Thomas Jefferson was really keen to write the Declaration of Independence himself. As he enjoyed a reputation of a witty person, he was not allowed to do it as there were fears that he would include some of his jokes in the text. That is why he only became a member of the committee in charge of the document
#7 This is how WWI soldiers paid tribute to the horses that had served them
#8 And that’s what taking selfies looked like 100 years ago
#9 This 1947 wedding dress was made by a bride who used a parachute that had saved her groom’s life during WWII (he was a pilot)
#10 A hundred years ago someone came up with an idea of tiny watch-shaped maps (an equivalent of our today’s Google maps?). Unfortunately they didn’t catch on
#11 A suffragette (one of the first feminists) who shocks people by showing she was wearing pants underneath her dress
#12 This is one of the oldest clocks still working. It was mounted in Prague in 1410
#13 This 2000-year-old Greek mosaic has been recently discovered in Greece. Beautiful, isn’t it?
#14 This gentleman promoted the hula-hoop , the ukulele and surfing boards all over the world. It was the last king of the Hawaii before the island was conquered by Americans
#15 A 3,000-year-old board game found in Tutankhamen’s tomb
#16 The winners of a beauty contest held in 1922
#17 Federic ‘Uncle Fed’ Messer was born in 1792 and died in 1907 in USA. The guy was really lucky. He lived for 114 years throughout three centuries: we was born in the 18th century, lived all the way through the 19th and died in the 20th.
Which story surprised you the most?
