Toward the end of every summer, we count down the days until those first crisp, cool days of autumn and prepare our wardrobes with care until it officially commences. From the textures to the detail to deep, dreamy hues, fall fashion is an all-around joy of an experience—and we can finally say that for 2021, it’s officially here.

It’s time to pack away our tank tops and denim shorts and fall headfirst into our piles of cozy knits, best jackets, and the most eye-catching pieces we’ll wear all year. Let us be the first to tell you: Fall 2021’s trends did not disappoint, and these seven are the absolute best of the best.

Tailoring

Blazers are considered wardrobe staples by now, but this season, the concept of menswear for women is being taken to another notch, with tailored (pretty much) everything.

From blazers paired with matching trousers to button-ups being layered under sweaters and jackets, the 2021 take on tailoring is all about being tailored from head to toe.

How to style it

The key to rocking 2021’s tailored trend is to lean into it full-force. Top off your pantsuit with a pair of loafers (rather than heels) to get the complete androgynous aesthetic. When in doubt, layer, layer, layer.

Saturated Shades

When it comes to fall, you probably think of deep hues of burnt orange and burgundy, but this year, saturated, bold hues are ruling the color wheel.

Purples, shades of marigold, kelly green, and all the shades of pink you could dream of are bringing us a brighter fall.

How to style it

If you have trouble swaying from your neutrals, opt for a simple sweater in an on-trend color to make the trend your own. If you don’t have a problem with color, mix and match different saturated shades with one another to create a bold, unexpected look.

Cropped Jackets

We’ve had blazers around long enough to get an exciting new twist on them this year. In addition to the oversized fits we always see, cropped blazers and jackets are making their way into our wardrobes.

The result? A feminine take on an otherwise more masculine trend, perfect for spicing up a piece we’re already familiar with.

How to style it

Find a cropped blazer that hits just right around your waist, then find a shirt to go underneath that’s around the same length. Pair the cropped duo with a high-waisted pair of pants (and make sure the hem of your shirt hits the top of your jeans if you don’t want any midriff showing).

Geometric Prints

Fall is known for being the most dominant season when it comes to pattern, and this year is no exception. Retro, ’70s-inspired geometric prints are making their way onto everything from sweaters to skirts.

How to style it

Find a gap in your wardrobe and get a piece that you’re missing in a geometric print. Whether it’s a skirt you choose to pair with a plain top or a louder midi dress, the print will do all of the talking.

Vests

Lucky for those of us who hopped onto the sweater vest train last year, they’re back again this year to an even higher degree.

While sweater vests are in again, particularly in brighter colors and patterns and more oversized fits, suit vests are also making their way into the scene as a nod to the tailored trend the fashion world is fully on board with.

How to style it

If you’re opting for a sweater vest, style it is as simple as can be: Just layer it over a long-sleeve shirt or bodysuit (or a button-up if you want to knock out two trends at once) and pair it with your favorite jeans or skirt. If you’re trying on a suit vest for size, try layering it under your favorite blazer or on top of a more oversized blouse to style it to perfection.

Prep School

It’s no surprise to see a wide range of plaid once autumn comes to town, but this year, it’s amplified further with the addition of it onto preppy silhouettes.

With polo collars, uniform-esque skirts, blazers, and pleating all trending at once, putting an outfit together that feels like you’re on your way to school means you’re exactly on-trend.

How to style it

Find two preppy pieces—like a sweater vest and pleated skirt or a button-up and plaid pants—and pair them together. If you want a more subtle take on the trend, pick up a top with a polo collar and pair it with your favorite pair of jeans.

Elevated Knits

Knits for fall aren’t exactly groundbreaking, but this season, they’re more luxe and worn in more excess than we’re used to.

With full-on sweater sets (and matching sweater-and-sweater-skirt combos), walking around in head-to-toe knit won’t be at all uncommon.

How to style it

If you’re ready to become the coziest version of yourself, a matching sweater and skirt set is for you. If you want to mix your textures more, opt to match a thick, luxe knit with your favorite jeans, or a pair of knit pants with a button-up or cotton bodysuit.

Midi Skirts

Dresses and skirts are always a fall staple, and this year, the midi length is back in buisness.

In knit materials or satin ones with pleats and in every color you can imagine, a midi skirt is the comfortable, effortless trend that’s both familiar and fresh.

How to style it

On a chilly day, pair your midi skirt with a chunky knit and your favorite booties. If you’re going to work or dressing it up, opt for a plain shirt and cropped jacket to perfect the proportions of the skirt and nail it every time.
