Banana baby food is quick and easy to make. Banana is perfect to offer a baby as a first food.

Ingredients you will need

To make my banana puree you will need just one thing:

  • banana
  • (optional) breast milk, baby formula
  • (optional) cinnamon

Ingredients Notes & Substitutions

  • Choose ripe bananas: Ripe bananas will show no trace of green skin. They will feel plump and their skin may have freckles (brown spots). Ripe bananas also smell sweet when sniffed.
  • Bananas with large black patches indicate the fruit is bruised
  • Bananas that seem to have shrivelled are past the point of perfect ripeness.
  • Breast milk or baby formula: If you wish you can add breast milk or baby formula to the puree.
  • Cinnamon: As an optional extra a little pinch of cinnamon can be a nice addition.

Prep: Peel and slice your banana

Step one: Add banana and optional ingredients if desired. Blend until smooth, this can be done with a stick blender, food processor or traditional blender.

Alternatively, you can mash your banana with a fork

  • Mashed bananas may end in very soft lumps that can be a good progression for babies increasing the texture in their complementary foods.
  • Make your banana baby food in advance and freeze it in either an ice cube tray or a baby food tray so that you have a quick snack in your freezer ready to go.
  • Frozen blocks of banana puree can be lovely for a teething baby to suck on.

FAQs

Does banana cause constipation in babies?

Banana contains a combination of insoluble and soluble fibre which both play roles in the transit time of food through the bowel. Go slowly when adding fibre to your baby's diet, it is natural for bowel motions to become more solid and formed as solids are added to their diet.

Does banana cause coffee ground appearance in baby bowel motions?

If you look closely at banana flesh you will see small black spots, these are actually tiny banana seeds. This can look like coffee grounds in your baby's stools. Coffee grounds in bowel motions can be a sign of bleeding in the gut, but it can also just be a sign your child has been enjoying bananas.
