These Old Fashioned Apple Muffins are worth making!

Old Fashioned Apple Muffins

Old Fashioned Apple Muffin Recipe

There are four parts to this Old Fashioned Apple Muffins Recipe–the muffins, the apples, the topping, and the glaze.

Muffins Ingredients

  • Butter–Room temperature
  • Vegetable oil
  • Granulated sugar
  • Eggs–Room temperature, as with most baking recipes
  • Baking powder
  • Baking soda
  • Homemade Apple pie spice–I used my homemade apple pie spice, which has more flavor than store-bought spice, so double the amount if you are using spice from a store.
  • Salt
  • Vanilla extract
  • Flour
  • Buttermilk–If you are feeling motivated, make your own homemade buttermilk!

Apple Ingredients

  • Granny Smith apples–peeled and diced
  • Granulated sugar
  • Homemade Apple pie spice–Remember to use twice as much apple pie spice if store-bought.

Topping Ingredients

  • Egg–whisked and brushed over muffin batter before adding turbinado sugar
  • Turbinado sugar–Turbinado sugar is coarser and has larger grains than white sugar. It also has a bit more flavor. I prefer turbinado sugar for my muffins because it gives them that extra shot of flavor and a bit more texture. Simply sprinkle the sugar over the eggwash of each muffin before baking.

Glaze Ingredients

  • Butter
  • Confectioners sugar
  • Vanilla
  • Whole milk

UnGlazed Apple Muffin

Unglazed Apple Muffin

How to Make Old Fashioned Apple Donut Muffins

I will start with the directions to make the apple muffins and save the glaze until last since you will not be putting the glaze on until the muffins have been baked. The topping, on the other hand, will go on the muffin batter BEFORE you bake them.

  • First, preheat the oven to 425°F and prepare your muffin tin with liners.
  • Next, in a large bowl, mix together the butter, oil, and both sugars. Then, after you beat in the eggs and add the baking powder, baking soda, apple pie spice, salt, and vanilla, alternate between adding the flour and the buttermilk, finishing with the flour.
  • Mix in your chopped apple mixture to the batter, and fill each muffin cup with the batter.
  • Finally, before baking, brush the egg wash over each muffin, followed by sprinkling the turbinado sugar over each muffin as well. Bake for 15-17 minutes and let them cool before you put on the glaze.

How to Make the Glaze for Old Fashioned Apple Muffins

While the muffins are cooling, mix together all the ingredients for the glaze. Take one muffin at a time, dipping them top down into the glaze. Let the first layer of the glaze harden before you dip it in again. Old Fashioned Apple Muffins are soft and so flavorful, you may want to double the batch next time!
