Pop It Syllables

If you’re looking for a hands-on, poppin’ way to practice syllable segmenting, you’ve come to the right spot! These Pop It Syllables are a great way to practice breaking words into syllables.

Getting Ready

Prep for these Pop It Syllables is quick and easy. First, print the task cards and laminate them for durability.

Then, cut along the lines to separate the pieces.

Grab enough Pop Its so each student can have one and you’re ready to go!

Pop It Syllables

To play, students will pick up one task card at a time. They will say the word out loud, and then clap or tap it out so they can pop each syllable they hear on their Pop It.

For instance, if a student grabbed the basket card, she would say, “Basket. /Bas/ (pop) /ket/ (pop).”

Then, she would grab the next card and pop the next set of syllables.

Optional: If students are ready for more of a challenge, have them keep track of their results on the record sheet that’s include in the file.

Play continues until all of the words have been popped.

This playful center is the perfect way to practice syllable segmenting – an essential tool for learning how to read!
