7 Tips For Keeping Your Clothes Like New For Longer

We all want to get the most out of our clothes, because it costs a fortune to keep replacing them when they are ruined.

Oh and we also have things that we absolutely love and want to keep for as long as possible, too!

Keeping your clothing looking as good as new isn’t always easy. Just sorting your colours from your whites isn’t always enough to stop your clothes from looking old over time. Here are some laundry tips your mum might not have ever told you… and some she probably did tell you when you weren’t listening!

Here are ways for keeping your clothes like new!

1.  Pay attention to the labels

I’m so guilty of not reading the labels, or ignoring them, when I wash my clothing. But the care instructions are there for a reason, and that’s to ensure your clothes stay in great shape when you clean them. So if it says don’t tumble dry or hand wash only, you probably should be doing what it says.

2. Wash things inside out

Turning your clothing inside out will help to protect it from fading and wash wear help you in keeping your clothes like new. Dark denim and pants are especially helped by this. Any garments that have print, beading or other embellishments should also be turned inside out to protect them against damage in the wash.

3. Do up buttons, zips and ties

When you put things in the washing machine, make sure any buttons are fastened and zippers are zipped up. It might seem like a pain, but it means your clothes are less likely to snag in the wash.

4. Don’t over-wash your clothes

You actually don’t necessarily have to wash your clothing every time you wear them. You should also air dry your clothes whenever possible as you’re causing extra wear and tear every time you put them in the dryer, even if you use a gentler setting. That way, you can easily be keeping your clothes like new.

5. Protect delicate items

A mesh laundry bag or pillowcase is fantastic for washing hosiery, socks, bras, undies and other delicate items. Pop them in the bag and wash with the rest of the laundry – the bag will protect them from getting damaged by other clothing in the wash.

6. Don’t use too much detergent

Pay close attention to what the instructions say on your detergent… and you can actually use less than what it says. You can actually stain your clothes or have too much residue left on them if you use too much soap.

7. Wash your jeans less

It sounds kind of gross, but if you want to preserve your jeans’ lifespan then you need to wash them less. Spot cleaning any stains and popping them into a plastic bag and putting them in the freezer for a few days when they are getting a bit rank is the better option. Any bacteria and stink is removed by the low temperatures, and they will feel freshly cleaned.
