7 Tips for Surviving New Years Eve (As a Mum)

For me, New Years Eve no longer means going to a party, getting completely drunk, kissing a stranger at midnight and then stumbling through the city in search of a taxi to get home.

These days, my idea of a good New Years Eve is enjoying a few glasses of bubbly with good friends and being snugly tucked up in bed before the clock even strikes 12!

As I get older (and wiser) and look back on the numerous New Years Eves Ive experienced, I have come up with my top seven tips for surviving one of the most fun nights of the year.

1. Drink wisely.

I would be willing to bet that the number one regret for most people on New Years Day is drinking too much the night before!

There really is nothing worse than waking up with a killer hangover and then cringing at all the silly things you did or said while under the influence.

Of course, indulge in your favourite drinks but if you do want to remember the night and feel human the next morning, drink in moderation. Keep track of what you consume and try to alternate alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

2. Put comfort first.

If you are at an event, then chances are, you will be on your feet pretty much the entire time. Dont be one of those ladies who has their shoes swinging from their hands by the end of the night!

It can be tricky to find a flattering heel thats not going to cripple you.little-mermaid-ariel-feet

These nude pumps are perfect for a night out and would look fabulous with a flirty dress or 3/4 pants. Best of all, they are so versatile that you will definitely be able to wear them again and again.

3. Charge your phone to 100%.

Make sure that you have a full battery before you head out. Then, you can rest easy that you can be contacted by friends, family (or the babysitter), call an Uber when its time to go home, take lots of photos of the fun youre having and, of course, immediately upload them to social media!

4. Dont make New Years resolutions on the night.

You are setting yourself up for failure! Especially if your resolutions are Im going to lose weight, Im going to start going to the gym everyday or Im going to meet the man of my dreams!

If you do want to set some goals for the new year, be realistic. Start small, break your main goal down into manageable steps and celebrate your progress.

5. Know that its OK to stay home.

New Years Eve can be one of the most overrated nights of the year. Expectations of a night full of fun, laughter and good food can be turned on its head when you realise that you cant even get a taxi or need to battle the crowds on public transport to even get to the party.

Being at home means that you dont have to dress up, you can eat or drink anything you want, you save lots of money, you dont need to be on the road and you can put on your pjs and hop into bed with a cup of tea at any time!

6. Pack a survival kit.

Ok, so youve decided to have a night out on the town. Even in a small clutch, you should have the bare minimum of your phone, some cash and a credit card.

If space permits, add some breath mints or gum (in anticipation of your midnight kiss), a lipstick and pressed powder for touch ups, and a hairbrush or comb.

7. Be grateful for the years past and ahead.

Often, the worries of the year just gone come down upon our shoulders on December 31st. The best thing to do is to take some time to reflect on the year gone by.

Acknowledge the times that were rough. Be grateful for the moments of happiness and joy. Set your intentions for the new year and most important of all, enjoy it all.

I would love to hear your tips on surviving New Years Eve!
