Letter: Figley, Republicans shouldn’t worry about bathrooms

In a recent column in The Lima News, Mark Figley was upset that schools in the state of Oregon were putting period products in the male restrooms. I can not understand Republicans’ obsession with what other people are doing in bathrooms.

I have been in a lot of public bathrooms. They are not that interesting.

Of all the issues facing America today — Jan. 6 hearings, school shootings, COVID-19, war in Europe — Figley is deeply concerned that someone he doesn’t know in a state he doesn’t live in might use a tampon.

Transgender or intersex Americans are less than 1% of America’s population. Yet Republicans like Figley seem to spend 80 percent of their time trying to see what’s in their pants. Well, I’ll tell you what’s in there. It’s nonya. There, mystery solved. They just want to be left alone. Why don’t you start there?

Is this really what Republicans care about? They could put a salon in there for all I care, as long as the toilet is not plugged and there’s plenty of paper. If the guy beside me is inserting a tampon, I don’t want to know. I don’t really care. And most importantly, it’s none of my business.

Figley has been sharing bathrooms with transgender and intersex people his whole life. He just didn’t know he was supposed to be upset about it. Figley is a willfully ignorant bigot who needs to focus on what’s in his own pants and stop worrying about everyone else’s.
